Do you use CGNAT and what is it?

Do you use CGNAT and what is it?

Some of you may know that we’re running out of IPv4 addresses! Not just Gigabit Networks but the entire world!

So, by default, all of our residential broadband customers are allocated a private IPv4 address which is translated to a public IPv4 address. This technology is called 'Carrier Grade NAT' or CGNAT, and has become commonplace in the broadband industry due to the dwindling supply of public IPv4 addresses.

Does this cause any performance issues?

No! Our CGNAT servers are amazing and we don’t expect customers to see any performance issues if they’re behind CGNAT.

What if I need a static IP Address?

First of all think about what you need a static IPv4 address for. If you are an avid gamer, host servers on your home network or have devices you want to control remotely when you are out of your home then a Static IPv4 address might be better for you otherwise you probably don't need one at all.

To get a Static IPv4 address, you will have to purchase our Static IPv4 add-on, currently available for £5 per month extra. For more details on this please contact our sales team at hello@gigabitnetworks.co.uk or on 01163 800290

If you don't want to purchase the add-on there are some alternatives to access your LAN devices remotely:

  • IPv6: We support IPv6 and every customer is allocated a set of IPv6 prefixes for usage. This will allow you to access your devices (as long as they support IPv6, which most modern devices do) on the network over IPv6 remotely, without port forwarding. This can only be done from other networks that also support IPv6.

  • Overlay networks: You may be able to use a 3rd party overlay network such as Tailscale or ZeroTier both of which have a free option.
